... was described in a BBC notice of his death as "one of the best–loved radio comics of the 1950s", and on Wikipedia as "one of the last links with music hall and variety in Great Britain". He used to begin every performance with his best–known catchphrase: "I won't take me coat off, I'm not stoppin'!"
Born in Leigh, Lancashire in 1921, he died in Blackpool in 1998.
